新しいライン「IRREGULAR LINE」を立ち上げたとの事ですが経緯をお聞かせいただけますか。
既存のラインでは、過去の実績に基づいた上代設定や数量・展開カラーなど商品を企画する前からある程度の枠組みが決まっていて、ある意味そこに目掛けたモノ作りになってしまっていたので新しいアイデアがチャレンジしにくい状況でした。
そのような状況から今回は既存のラインと線引きをし、シーズンに推していきたいアイテムにフォーカスを当て、こだわった物作りのアイテムをリリースしたいと思ったのが一番の動機です。
What made you to decide to launch a new line?
For our usual process, there is a certain outline/method for how to develop a collection based on sales result. For example how to set prices, color variation etc. I’ve been feeling that this is kind of stopping us from challenging something new. I’ve been questioning myself that we are making collection based on figures on the past. So, I wanted to make a new line which only includes items I could be committed to.
既存のラインとの違いを具体的にお聞かせいただけますか。
既存のラインとの違いというのは、先ほどお話しした上代設定・数量や生産背景、原料選定、縫製テクニック等の制約を設けずに、コストの事も考えず面白いアイデアを積み上げたアイテム群になっていると思います。
故に、生産効率が悪くてたくさん作る方が割に合わないアイテムもあると思うのですが、そんな物作りに共感いただける取引先様にご協力頂き商品化しています。
そのような背景もあるのですが、「IRREGULAR LINE」はシーズンに1～2回程度、不定期でその時に面白いと思ったアイテムを限定数量で生産・販売をしたいと考えています。
いつ売るからいつから話を進めて、という既存の物作りのスケジュールの縛りもなく、ある種ヒトやモノなどの偶発的な出会いからスタートしていければと考えています。
あと、このラインは全身コーディネート可能なフルラインナップの展開ではなく、アイテムや素材等にフォーカスして展開するという所にもこだわりたいですね。
極端に言うと同じデザインだけど素材違いで10素材展開や、1素材で10型など。
What are specific differences between existing collection and the new line?
The biggest difference would be that there are no limits on retail price, quantity, production background, materials as well as techniques. We even didn’t set limit on the cost. Just concentrated gathering fun ideas.
Therefore, some items in this line are not suitable for making in bulk. They are simply less productive. But luckily we got partners who could sympathize with this approach and came to realize the new line together. Because of such behind story, “IRREGULAR LINE” will be released once or maybe twice in a regular season. There are no release calendar planned in advance. The line will only include items I’m truly interested in time to time. And it will be produced in small quantity. For this line, I hope I can start creation from encountering people or unexpected inspirations, not by following the fashion calendar. Also, I’ m not thinking to cover everything head to toe coordination with this line. It’s bit extreme but, there could be only one item in 10 colors, or one item in 10 different material or something like that.
ネーミングの由来、ブランドネームのこだわりを教えてください。
軍物の規格から外れたものでIRREGULARのスタンプが押されたものがあるのですがそこからの着想です。
monkey timeの織ネームの上から刺繍を施していて、パッと見で違いを認識いただけるようにしています。
How did you decide the name of the line?
I got the idea from the IRREGULAR stamp on military items not up to standards.
For the woven labels of IRREGULAR LINE, we put embroidery on the existing labels so that we can see the difference at a glance.
今回、「IRREGULAR LINE」の第一弾としてローンチする今シーズン推しのアイテムを教えてください。
第一弾はニットアウターです。
特に今シーズンは布帛素材のアウター代わりとしておすすめしたいアイテムで、いままで展開していた商品にはないテクニックや糸使いのアイコニックなニットを展開します。
What is the most recommended item from the first collection?
It will be the knitted outerwear. I would recommend it as replacement for ordinal coats in this winter
The yarn and the knitting technique is very iconic.
それぞれのアイテムのこだわりを教えてください。
一つ目は、引き返し編みという手法でパッチワーク風に表現したコットン100%のジップアップカーディガンです。
一般的なニットでも肩の傾斜などに用いられるテクニックなのですが、そのテクニックを全体に使いつつ配色にする事でパッチワーク風にアレンジしています。
あと、最初のサンプルが上がってきて試着をした際に裏面の方が引き返し編みの見え方が面白いと思ったので身頃と袖は引き返し編みの裏面を採用していますね。
What makes each item so special?
First, please see this cotton zip cardigan. This piece was done by Partial knitting which a is technique usually used for knitting shoulder part. When I tried on the first sample, I found that the back side of the stitch look more unique than its surface. So body and sleeves of the cardigan have been inside out. Also by mixing several colors, it looks like patchwork.
もう一つは、上質なスーツやニットなどに使用されるエクストラメリノウールを使用したダブルジャガードのカーディガンです。
エクストラメリノウールはメリノウールの中でも繊維が特に細くて柔らかいので肌触りが良いのが特徴的な糸になります。
その糸をこれでもかというぐらい最大限に目を詰めて山柄に編み上げました。故に着応えがありアウターとして着用していただけるアイテムに仕上げています。
The other item is double jacquard cardigan. It’s made of Extra Merino Wool which usually used for luxury suit and sweaters. Extra Merino wool is especially thin thread among merino wool. Surprisingly soft and smooth touch. By knitting this delicate thread as fine as possible, it has become a cardigan with thickness and volume. This can be worn as an outerwear. And the mountain scenery was created by knitting. This is not a print.

春夏シーズンはアウターの上にベストを重ねたレイヤードスタイルを提案していたのですが、
その流れでミリタリーやアウトドアなどのスペック感やギア感のあるライトアウターやジャケットの上に重ね、表情豊かな温かみのあるスタイルを提案したいと思っています。
Recommended styling with these cardigan?
For the spring/summer season, I was proposing a layered style of a vest over outerwear. For the coming seasons, I want to show warm and expressive style by layering cardigan on functional light outerwear. Like putting the cardigan on military or outdoor style jackets.
不定期のリリースとお伺いをしましたが、今後「IRREGULAR LINE」として展開したいアイテムなどあれば教えてください。
すでにmonkey timeでお取組みさせていただいているブランド様以外のブランドコラボや、こだわりのリメイクで一点ものなんかも面白いですね。
Are there any particular items you are thinking to make near future?
Collaboration with new brand we never worked with, or one and only remake item would be fun.
